The official race of the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the Shamrock Run & Walk is a 4 mile course from Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis to the Irish Hill neighborhood (Fountain Square). The race takes place on Saturday, March 19th at 10:00am. Registration is available at IndyStPats.com with a special registration rate running through January 22nd.
Historically, the event was created at the Indianapolis Athletic Club (IAC) and hosted by a non-profit Foundation (Indy Sports Foundation). The all volunteer Foundation was started at the IAC in 1984 with a mission of supporting amateur sports in central Indiana. The IAC closed its doors in 2004 but the Foundation edured and now the Columbia Club on Monument Circle serves as the host venue for the event.
Net proceeds from the Shamrock Run & Walk go to support local amateur sports organizations. In 2015, PlayBall Indiana, Kids Tri for Kids, The Oaks Academy and Mother Theodore Catholic Academies received grant assistiance. Organizations in need of financial assistance can fill out an allocations request at IndySportsFoundation.com.
In 2016, the race added a 2.1 mile walk and run course, kids 12 and under can participate for free and there is a new group rate feature. Participants come dressed in their best Irish race costume. In addition to live entertainment on the course there is an post race celebration on Monument Circle and Columbia Club with a live entertainment stage, beer garden and food.
